Primemeridianstore Notes From The Headlight Bench

Primemeridianstore writes these notes between jobs, usually the afternoon after a lamp that should have been simple turned out not to be, and they are aimed at people who want to understand a headlight before paying somebody else to fix it.

Both of these started as answers to questions we had already given on the phone a few dozen times. Nothing here is written to sell a kit. If it were, we would say so.

Halogen To LED: What Actually Changes On The Road

Colour temperature gets all the attention and almost none of it matters. What you actually notice on a dark road is where the light lands, how sharp the cut-off sits, and whether the pattern survives a wet night. This one goes through each of those in plain numbers from our own wall test.

Why Cloudy Headlights Cut Your Night Vision

A yellowed lens swallows a surprising amount of output. We put a pair on the meter before and after restoration on the same bench with the same bulbs and the difference was bigger than expected. Worth reading before you spend money on a projector kit.

Why these exist

A note is cheaper than a wasted fitting

Most of what we write about starts as a question on the phone. Someone has just bought a projector kit off a marketplace, fitted it themselves, and now the beam is pointing at the trees. Or they have spent eight hundred dollars on a retrofit when a two hundred dollar restoration would have fixed the actual problem. Writing it down means the next person does not have to make the same mistake to learn the lesson.

Nothing on this page is paid for. There are no sponsored links, no discount codes, and no products placed in front of you because a supplier asked nicely. If a part gets recommended, it is because it survived on our bench, not because somebody wrote a cheque.

  • Written by the people who do the work
  • Measured on our own wall, not borrowed from a spec sheet
  • Updated when we learn something new on a job

Two jobs behind most of the questions

If you land here looking for a price or a booking, these two pages carry the detail. The articles above exist because people asked about them.

Bi-LED Projector Retrofit

Housing opened, projector and shroud fitted, wiring loomed, whole assembly resealed and calibrated on the wall and the road. The subject of more than half the questions that end up in these notes.

What is coming

On the bench for the next article

We keep a running list of the questions that keep coming up. When one repeats often enough, it becomes a note. Here are three that are being drafted now, added as they come up on real jobs rather than on a schedule.

  • Why a canbus module fixes some flicks and not others
  • Opening a lamp that another shop already sealed with silicone
  • What to look at when one side is brighter than the other after a fitting

Ask a question, get an answer

If a question is not covered here, ring the shop or send it through the contact form. There is a decent chance it ends up on this page a month later, with the car details changed so nobody gets identified.

Need a job done?

The bench is open during the week

If a note here has convinced you it is worth doing properly, the pricing page has every job and every part, and the contact page gets you a phone call back the same day.
